YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH

LEADERSHIP PROGRAMS

NEXT GENERATION

Asian Mental Health Leadership

Youth are at the heart of Thriving Asians’ mission to shape a mentally healthier future for Asian communities.

Our Youth Mental Health Leadership Programs seek to inspire commitment to mental health & wellbeing among the next generation of leaders.

Goals

Thriving Asians’ Youth Mental Health Leadership Programs aim to:

  • Educate Asian youth leaders on Asian community mental health - including key issues, cultural stigma, and community strengths

  • Train Asian youth leaders in core skills to serve as peer mental health advocates, educators, and supporters in their communities

  • Connect youth to Asian community peers, professionals, and mentors

  • Cultivate professional interest in the mental health field and related leadership roles to serve AANHPI communities

  • Support the mental health & holistic success of Asian-identifying youth leaders

Key Components

Community

The Youth Mental Health Leaders community gathers at virtual group sessions on biweekly Saturdays from 12 - 2 PM ET / 9 - 11 AM PT.

Group sessions bring together diverse Asian young leaders who are passionate about mental health, and involved in various roles/projects at Thriving Asians. Each session provides space for students to connect with peers, mentors, and speakers.

Skills Training

At group sessions, students receive training in core skills for peer mental health leadership, and to support the success of their implementation projects. Training topics center on:

  • Asian Community Mental Health

  • Peer Education & Advocacy

  • Project Coordination

  • Outreach & Engagement

  • Peer Support

Trainings are taught by TA Mentors and expert guest speakers - introducing students to interdisciplinary career paths in mental health leadership; and fostering warm accessible connections to potential mentors.

Mentorship

In addition to group sessions, Youth Mental Health Leaders have 1:1 or small group virtual meetings with an assigned Mentor. Mentor meetings provide space for students to receive individualized project guidance, and mentorship towards their overall professional/personal development goals.

Mentor meetings are arranged according to students’ schedules - on a monthly basis, or as needed per project/student needs.

Project Implementation

Each Youth Mental Health Leader works on an implementation project through the duration of the program. Implementation projects are an opportunity for students to apply lessons learned from training & mentorship to make real world impacts.

Projects vary according to students’ program/role - ranging from workshop facilitation in your local community, to resource development for global diaspora communities. Check out Student Spotlights to learn about current student and alumni projects
